A hand grinder with 8-micron adjustment steps and 48mm coated burrs. You supply the motor, and in exchange you get espresso resolution that costs several times as much in an electric grinder.

The 1Zpresso J-Ultra is a hand grinder with 48mm conical burrs and stepped adjustment, typically $220–$260. It suits espresso resolution on a budget and very small kitchens. It is the wrong choice for serving several people and anyone with wrist or grip limitations.

Weigh beans in, grind by hand for about a minute, twist off the magnetic cup and dose. Adjustment is a numbered external ring.
Where people go next: DF54, Niche Zero.
The effort is not a detail — try to be honest about whether you will still do this on a Wednesday in February.
Paired with a Flair 58 or a Gaggia Classic, this makes a serious espresso setup for well under $1,000.

Hand grinders deliver burr quality far above their price because you supply the motor. The cost is roughly a minute of effort per shot, every shot.
Flat burrs tend to produce a narrower particle distribution, which many people read as clarity and separation. Conical burrs are cheaper to make, run cooler and are often described as producing a heavier, more forgiving cup. Burr quality and alignment matter more than shape.
Larger burrs cut more coffee per rotation, so they grind faster and run cooler. Diameter is a rough proxy for grinder class, not a quality score on its own.
1Zpresso specifies a 48mm burr set for the J-Ultra.
Hardened steel is the norm and holds an edge for years of home use. Ceramic stays sharp longer but is more brittle; coatings mainly extend life.
Espresso is sensitive to very small grind changes. Stepless adjustment lets you land between two settings, which is the difference between a shot that runs in 25 seconds and one that runs in 40. Stepped grinders with fine enough steps are perfectly workable.
Stepped, but at 8 microns per click the steps are far finer than a typical stepped electric grinder.
Whether the grinder actually reaches, and can be adjusted usefully within, the espresso range. Many well-regarded filter grinders cannot, and a grinder that only just reaches espresso leaves you no room to dial in.
Matters if this is your only grinder and you also make pour-over or French press.
The adjustment range extends well past espresso into filter.
How far the burrs actually move per click. Espresso responds to changes of a few microns, so a small step is what lets you land on the shot you wanted instead of just beside it.
Single-dosing means weighing beans per shot: fresher, easy to switch coffees, more steps. A hopper is faster in the morning but leaves beans sitting in the open and makes changing beans a chore.
Height with the hopper fitted — the figure that decides whether it fits under a wall cabinet.

Heavier grinders tend to stay still and damp vibration.

The J-Ultra is ahead on control over the shot. The Encore ESP is ahead on speed in the morning and being forgiving to learn on. Neither is wrong — pick the one whose strength is the thing you actually care about. The Encore ESP also costs less, at $180–$230.
