Breville Bambino

Best for small kitchens under $500

Counter space is the binding constraint.

The smallest serious espresso machine Breville makes. It heats in seconds, takes a real 54mm portafilter and asks you to bring your own grinder — which is exactly the trade that makes it interesting at this price.

In short

The Breville Bambino is a semi-automatic with ThermoJet heating and a 54mm portafilter, typically $280–$350. It does not include a grinder, so budget for one alongside it. It suits beginners who intend to buy a separate grinder and small kitchens. It is the wrong choice for making four milk drinks back to back and buyers who want the machine to grind too.

How it fits

Preinfuse ratings, not measurements. Each one is produced by published rules from the specifications below — open any row to see which facts moved it.

What it does well

  • Three-second heat-up makes espresso realistic on a weekday morning.
  • A 6.1-inch footprint that genuinely disappears on a crowded counter.
  • Ships with both pressurised and non-pressurised baskets, so it works before you own a good grinder and improves once you do.
  • Costs little enough that the grinder can take the larger share of the budget.

Where it gives ground

  • No PID, so brew temperature is not held as tightly as on Breville's Barista line.
  • Brewing and steaming share one heater — you wait between the shot and the milk.
  • Manual steam wand with a learning curve; the Bambino Plus automates this.
  • 54mm portafilter, so the accessory market is smaller than for 58mm machines.

Buy it for

  • Beginners who intend to buy a separate grinder
  • Small kitchens
  • Fast weekday espresso
  • Anyone deliberately spending more on the grinder than the machine

Look elsewhere if

  • Making four milk drinks back to back
  • Buyers who want the machine to grind too
  • Anyone who wants adjustable brew temperature

Decided?

This machine needs a grinder. The pairings below are the ones that suit it, or the setup builder will split a budget across both.

Living with it

Switch on, and it is ready before you have finished weighing the beans. Grind, dose and tamp yourself, lock in, and press one or two cups. Steaming is a separate step with a manual wand.

Where people go next: Breville Barista Pro, Gaggia Classic Pro E24.

Before you buy

Budget for a grinder. This machine is only as good as what feeds it, and the pressurised baskets are a stopgap rather than a destination.

If you make milk drinks every day and do not want to learn to steam, the Bambino Plus adds an automatic wand for a few hundred dollars more.

Why this, not the Bambino Plus?

The Bambino is ahead on counter space and control over the shot. The Bambino Plus is ahead on being forgiving to learn on and speed in the morning. Neither is wrong — pick the one whose strength is the thing you actually care about. The Bambino Plus costs more, at $420–$500.
