The Niche Zero is a grinder with 63mm conical burrs and stepless adjustment, typically $750–$850. It suits setups from $1,000 upward and single-dosing. It is the wrong choice for tight budgets and speed-first mornings.

Weigh a dose into the cup, tip it in, grind, and the grounds fall into the 58mm cup. Adjust on the collar against your own reference mark.
The usual mistake is buying this alongside a $400 machine. It will make that machine better, but the money is better balanced with a Gaggia Classic Pro or above.
Check the lid-up height against your cabinets, not the closed height.

Hand grinders deliver burr quality far above their price because you supply the motor. The cost is roughly a minute of effort per shot, every shot.
Mains-powered grinder.
Flat burrs tend to produce a narrower particle distribution, which many people read as clarity and separation. Conical burrs are cheaper to make, run cooler and are often described as producing a heavier, more forgiving cup. Burr quality and alignment matter more than shape.
Larger burrs cut more coffee per rotation, so they grind faster and run cooler. Diameter is a rough proxy for grinder class, not a quality score on its own.
Espresso is sensitive to very small grind changes. Stepless adjustment lets you land between two settings, which is the difference between a shot that runs in 25 seconds and one that runs in 40. Stepped grinders with fine enough steps are perfectly workable.
Niche documents a continuously variable collar adjustment with reference markings.
Whether the grinder actually reaches, and can be adjusted usefully within, the espresso range. Many well-regarded filter grinders cannot, and a grinder that only just reaches espresso leaves you no room to dial in.
Matters if this is your only grinder and you also make pour-over or French press.
Single-dosing means weighing beans per shot: fresher, easy to switch coffees, more steps. A hopper is faster in the morning but leaves beans sitting in the open and makes changing beans a chore.
Grounds left inside the grinder between doses, which stale into the next shot. Only reported where the manufacturer documents it — independent figures vary too much by method to state as fact.
Classified from Niche's documented single-dose design; we do not state a number we cannot source.
Height with the hopper fitted — the figure that decides whether it fits under a wall cabinet.
Converted from the 311mm height Niche publishes. Allow 17.1 inches with the lid upright.
Machines where this grinder is the sensible partner rather than an expensive mismatch.

The Niche Zero is ahead on control over the shot, and the DF54 does not lead it on anything we rate. The reason to prefer the DF54 is price or availability, not capability. The DF54 also costs less, at $230–$300.
