Breville
Barista Pro
Best for fast mornings under $1,000You want espresso on a weekday, not a ritual.
The Barista Pro leads on speed in the morning; the Barista Express Impress leads on control over the shot and room to improve. Which of those matters is the actual decision, and the table below names every difference.
These two are close enough that the decision comes down to the differences below rather than to an overall winner.

Ratings are Preinfuse judgements derived from published specifications by documented rules, not measurements. A highlighted score leads by two points or more; anything closer is a trade-off rather than a win.
The single biggest structural difference between espresso machines.
A PID holds brew water within a narrow band instead of letting a thermostat swing around a target.

The single biggest structural difference between espresso machines. Thermoblock and thermocoil designs heat water on demand, so they are ready in seconds but cannot brew and steam at once. A heat exchanger or dual boiler can do both simultaneously, at the cost of a long warm-up and a higher price.
A PID holds brew water within a narrow band instead of letting a thermostat swing around a target. It makes shots repeatable day to day; it does not by itself make coffee taste better.
How long from switch-on to first shot, as stated by the manufacturer. Short heat-up is the difference between espresso on a weekday and espresso only on a Sunday.
Turns an invisible variable into a visible one, which is how most people learn to correct their grind. Not a requirement, but a genuine teaching aid.
How many discrete grind positions the built-in grinder offers. More positions means finer control over shot speed.
Determines how often you refill. A small tank is a daily annoyance in a household making several drinks a day.
Counter width the machine occupies.
Counter depth. The number that most often catches people out, because standard cabinets leave limited clearance.
Overall height. Check it against wall cabinets, and remember the water tank often has to come out from the top.
Draw on the circuit. Relevant if the machine shares a kitchen circuit with other high-draw appliances.
US domestic supply is 120V. Imported machines specified at 220–240V need a transformer and are usually a mistake.
Stainless steel housings feel and last differently from moulded plastic, and cost accordingly.
